Hannah Smith Novels

Hannah Smith, known to fly fishing aficionados from Boseman to Key West as 'Capt. Hannah,' is one of Florida's most respected light tackle guides and does not suffer fools lightly. She is tall, athletic and oddly attractive in a way that requires more than a passing look. In fiction and in fact, her character is based  on a pair of sisters, Hannah and Sarah Smith, who were well known in the Florida of the late 1800s. Hannah was nicknamed Big Six because of her height. She chopped wood for a living, and had terrible taste in men, as was proven when her pregnant body was found murdered and floating in Chatham River south of Marco.

Sarah Smith was called The Ox Woman, because she was the first human being to drive an ox cart across the Everglades. And she did it alone. This is all true according to historical accounts. In Doc Ford’s, fictional world, every generation afterward, the Smith family named a girl child Hannah, in honor of their famous aunt. The novels, GONE, DECEIVED, HAUNTED, SEDUCED, which are critically acclaimed and have won consecutive Gold Medal awards for fiction, also feature biologist Doc Ford and his hipster pal, Tomlinson.
